Vinyl-a-Day 49: The Spiral Starecase - “More Today Than Yesterday” (Columbia, 1969)

Sticking with yesterday’s theme of one-album wonders, this group’s only full-length album features their top-20 hit “More Today Than Yesterday.” The songs on the rest of the album, though comprised of a few originals and obligatory covers of the era like “Proud Mary," "Our Day Will Come," and “For Once in My Life,” are given the same treatment as the title track with punchy brass flourishes and soaring tenor vocals from frontman Pat Upton. Unlike a lot of similar releases of the era from group’s who only had one album, this full-length release shows that the group’s time in the spotlight should have endured as long as their biggest hit, which is still an oldies staple today. Side note: I interviewed Pat Upton for my book on Tiny Tim and he was a really nice guy.
